SCORE, a nonprofit association helping small businesses get off the ground, kicks off Small Business Week an entire month early with this educational, information backed webinar.

“We know that many small businesses and organizations find themselves seeking the right strategies, tools and tactics to make their marketing efforts as effective as possible,” states the SCORE website.

SCORE offers a webinar titled “Working Towards a Work Life Balance,” at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 23.

Superior Energy Solutions honored by AEP Ohio

Superior Energy Solutions, LLC, of Ottawa, was recently honored by AEP Ohio, at the AEP Ohio Energy Efficient Champion Awards Luncheon for 2012.

Superior Energy Solutions, LLC, was the award winner for the Commercial Program Partners: Small Business Contractor.

Superior Energy Solutions provides commercial lighting assessments and installations, including utility company rebates for all non-residential applications. Located in Ottawa, Ohio, Superior Energy Solutions was one of the first contractors to register in the AEP Ohio Express program and completed one of the first projects in 2010.

April is Encore Entrepreneur Mentor Month

April 30th from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Small Business Adminstration’s Columbus District Office, AARP and the Newark SCORE Chapter will host a FREE workshop in honor of National Encore Entrepreneur Mentor Month. The event is targeted to entrepreneurs ages 50+ and will include presentations on using social media as a business tool and an overview of how to start a business as well as a panel of successful Encore Entrepreneurs.

National Encore Entrepreneur Mentor Month is part of a larger effort by SBA, SCORE and AARP to promote entrepreneurship among individuals ages 50 and older.

When: Tuesday, April 30th - 8:30 am to noon

BCE 2nd place winner in 2012 Business Plan Competition launches "Small House Bluffton"

The owner of Bluffton’s newest business has big plans for thinking small.

Andy Chapell-Dick of Bluffton, a general and remodeling contractor, has started Small House Bluffton, a business whose focus is constructing small, fully-functional houses.

“A lot of people want to go small, not just empty nesters, but people who for a practical basis see the cost of living going up,” Chappell-Dick says, in explaining his new venture.

“Bluffton is a unique community. I’m providing something the community hasn’t seen. It’s different housing option,” he said.

Ropp Triplett Business Plan Competition announced

Bluffton Center for Entrepreneurs is accepting entries in the Ropp Triplett Business Plan Competition, according to Denise Durenberger, BCE executive director.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the first three winners in the competition that honors the late Ropp Triplett, long-time Bluffton industrial leader and entrepreneur.

“The contest is open to start-up businesses and emerging businesses that are less than three years old.  The competition teaches entrepreneurs to write a business plan that will help them improve their existing business or to successfully start a new one,” said Durenberger.

Incubators and social networks: Your time online

Many incubator managers are hesitant to integrate social media into their programs, fearing the effort will be nothing more than a distraction that takes time away from their core mission of assisting client companies. That fear is valid; however, social media is an increasingly important tactical component of an effective marketing plan that can supplement and enhance relationships in the business community.

The economic environment is turning around for America’s small businesses despite some lingering challenges from the recession that hit the nation in 2008-2009, according to a new report released today by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Advocacy, an independent office that serves as the voice for small business within the federal government.

The Small Business Economy 2012 demonstrates that small businesses have been at the core of our economy’s growth over the past few years,” said Dr. Winslow Sargeant, Chief Counsel for Advocacy.
